Get Quick wins with SEO

assorted chess piece

We tend to see SEO as requiring a LOT of time and effort, and many people don’t even start because of that.

In this newsletter, I’ll show how you can make some quick wins with SEO.

You don’t need to wait for 6 months or 50 blog posts to start seeing results!

The technical part

This part requires a lot more than a few lines in a newsletter to really be mastered, but here is an overview of it:

You need to set up a few stuff to get started:

  • Make your website FAST (on mobile). Google will penalize slow pages, so start optimizing your images/libraries, etc… Use PageSpeed to test it

  • Register to Google Search Console. It will give you all the pages indexed by Google, the errors, if any, and the traffic.

  • Organize your content! Each post should have titles. That’s how Google understands what your content is about. But also organize your posts with tags/categories and make links between them

If you want a very good guide about technical SEO, check this doc by DemandCurve

Look for low-competition keywords

Now that your site is ready let’s write the first post!

The easiest way I found to get low-competition keywords is to use Google and the Keywords Everywhere extension.

Once you install the extension, you have an estimate of keywords difficulty and some long tail keywords.

Browse them until you find keywords with less than 50/100 in difficulty and no big players in the top 5 results.

Analyze your competition

Once you have your target keyword, it’s time to evaluate the competition on this particular keyword.

I use Keyword Surfer for that. It shows the estimated traffic of each link as well as the length of the post.

To get fast results, try to find keywords where the competition has less than 2000 words and where the sites aren’t well-known.

The goal here is to do a better job than the competition. It’s called the skyscraper technique. By using this technique on low-competition keywords, you can definitely rank in the top 5 results in a few days!

Answer the People

If you struggle to find good keywords, using the Google “People also ask” section is a great way you should try:

Just click on the questions, and analyze the results like in the previous section.

The more you click on questions to see the details, the more Google will generate new questions. Just rinse and repeat until you find the perfect one!

Just use the keyword as your blog title and genuinely answer the question. You should see results pretty quickly!

Share it!

Don’t forget to share your blog post when published. That’s also a great way to make a quick win!

Share it in all communities where it could be relevant (Reddit, FaceBook groups…), and share it on your social media as well.

The more traction it gets online, the more you generate backlinks, and the more Google ranks it high!

That’s all for today!

It was a quick overview of SEO, let me know in the comments (or reply to this email) if you me to create more content about it!
